COREY TAYLOR Reveals Title Of STONE SOUR's Upcoming Covers Album
October 30, 2014STONE SOUR has set "Meanwhile In Burbank" as the title of its upcoming covers album, tentatively due next year. There's no word yet on which songs the band intends to include on the disc, which is being recorded at the Burbank, California studio of the group's drummer, Roy Mayorga.
During an appearance on HATEBREED frontman Jamey Jasta's official podcast, "The Jasta Show", STONE SOUR singer Corey Taylor said: "We've been talking about [recording a collection of covers] forever. I mean, this is something that we've been talking about since the first album came out, with STONE SOUR. We've always wanted to do this. Even as people have come, people have gone, this is still something we've always come back to, and we just never had the opportunity to do it. And we just kind of said, 'Well, screw it.'
"Roy's been slowly but surely kind of building his house studio. So we just started doing it like that — fucking low dough, and it sounds killer. There's no fucking pressure. You're just having fun. You're going back to these songs that you just love to listen to, not only just sing. And that's why it's called 'Meanwhile In Burbank', because, without giving too much away, that's where Roy lives — he lives in the Valley — so that's why we call it that. Because it's, like, that's what we're doing right now."
On its last North American tour, STONE SOUR treated fans to a different cover every night, including METALLICA's "Creeping Death", KISS' "Love Gun", JUDAS PRIEST's "Heading Out To The Highway" and PETER GABRIEL's "In Your Eyes". Taylor told The Pulse Of Radio why he enjoys covering other artists' songs. "The thing I love about playing covers is that it's a chance to walk in the footsteps of your heroes," he said. "It's a chance to have fun. There's a certain amount of relaxation that comes when you don't have to worry about your song. This is someone else's song, you know. This is where you can relax and just remember why you're a music fan in the first place."
STONE SOUR completed the touring cycle earlier this year for its recent double album, "House Of Gold And Bones", which was issued in two parts in 2012 and 2013.
Jim Root, who has played on all five STONE SOUR records to date, did not perform on the last tour. Although the official reason given at the time was that he was staying home to work on the new SLIPKNOT album, it was later revealed that he was dismissed from STONE SOUR. He has since been replaced by Christian Martucci
Root said in a recent interview that he was fired by phone and is still not sure why he was dismissed in the first place.
Root and Taylor continue to work together in SLIPKNOT, whose new album, ".5: The Gray Chapter", came out on October 21.
